Community Supported Agriculture (CSAs) is a model where the consumer purchases a share of the farm's harvest up front and then receives a portion of that harvest every week for a set amount of time. CSAs help to reconnect the customer with the source of their food and the farmers with the community.
We have had a CSA program for 6 years now and strongly believe in the model. We grow organic food for people that we know personally and who receive a portion of our harvest each week. They visit the farm and see how we grow their food, we talk every week, we share recipes-it's great!
In 2012, we plan to rely more on our CSA programs and less on selling our farm products at farmer's markets. We will have pick up locations in Winston-Salem, Clemmons, and possibly Statesville, Kernersville and Greensboro as well. Want to start a CSA pick up at your place of businass? As long as enough people join, we are glad to set up new/special pick up locations at hospitals, doctor's offices and office parks. Contact us with your ideas!
Advantages for consumers:
Eat ultra-fresh food, with all the flavor and vitamin benefits of organic vegetables
Get exposed to new vegetables and new ways of cooking
Get to visit the farm at least once a season
Find that kids typically favor food from "their" farm – even veggies they've never been known to eat
Develop a relationship with the farmer who grows their food and learn more about how food is grown
Advantages for farmers:
Get to spend time marketing the food early in the year, before their 16 hour days in the field begin
Receive payment early in the season, which helps with the farm's cash flow
Have an opportunity to get to know the people who eat the food they grow-the BEST part!!!
