Heritage Poultry

All of our poultry are raised on pasture in mobile housing and mobile electric pens so that they always have fresh, clean grass. We do not use poultry "tractors", but prefer to let the birds roam in fenced pastures so that they have more room and can engage in all of their natural bird behaviors like scratching in the grass, chasing bugs and dust bathing.

We NEVER give our birds medicated feeds or antibiotics. Birds raised naturally are healthier and cleaner and do not need to be medicated in order to survive.

We currently feed organic corn and wheat, organic vegetables, whey and regular bagged feed to our poultry. Eventually we would like to switch to all organic feed but at this time it is not available in our area and the price per bag is prohibative.

Laying Hens- Our layers are all old, heritage breeds of chickens that forage well on pasture. We keep Anconas, Speckled Susses, Delaware, Black Australorp. Dominique, Barred Rocks, Buff Orpingtons, Rhode Island Reds, Blue Andalusians, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Light Brown Leghorns and Ameracanas (these are not a standard breed, but we like the blue eggs!).

Meat Chickens- We currently raise both Cornish Rock cross chickens and heritage chickens for meat. However, we have decided that we want to be more sustainable by raising our own chicks, so we will no longer continue to raise Cornish X chickens. The heritage chickens are healthier and more natural and the flavor of a heritage bird is unbelievable. We offer whole chickens as well as chicken cut up and sold by the part. We process some of the chickens ourselves and send some to a USDA processor.
